Irish towns are home to one-third of the population and play a critical role in the cultural, social and economic life of the nation. But multiple challenges like lack of investment, exacerbated by a lack of data, joined-up thinking, and a coherent, evidence based approach to governance, policy and funding negatively impact urban resilience, and well-being. The UCD Centre for Irish Towns (CfIT) supports resilient and sustainable communities, promoting open and participatory democracies and championing nature-based solutions. CfIT contributed to the Government of Ireland's Town Centre First policy and brings communities, stakeholders and researchers together to support the revitalisation of Irish towns.
Inherent problems with supply chains have led to major environmental disasters and widespread social inequality. Professor Donna Marshall works with industry to develop tools and techniques that allow them to assess their supply chains effectively and try to prevent such disasters and improve working conditions for the future. Her work has identified strategies that businesses use to hide unappealing supply chain information and effective incentives to help align values with sustainability. The research demonstrates that through improved visibility and transparency, industry can significantly increase sustainability both environmentally and socially.
The Department of Transport, Climate, Environment & Communications recently launched the €169 million Irish programme for the EU Just Transition Fund to assist communities in moving to a climate neutral economy. One of the main challenges will be overcoming scepticism about the Just Transition and distrust in the political agenda. Established in 2022, the UCD Just Transition Research Group has created a network of inter-disciplinary experts across sectors who are stimulating academic debate around a Just Transition and informing policy makers about existing research. Their work focuses particularly on 'spatial injustice' and building trust within communities towards achieving effective frameworks for the future.
A project led by Professor Andreas Hoepner illustrates in visual format how UCD College of Business academics have published more than 250 papers relating to the SDGs. The map highlights faculty's positive impact in solving some of the most pressing global challenges through their research relating to Climate Action, Reduced Inequalities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Affordable and Clean Energy, and more. This project demonstrates the importance of measuring how the SDGs are integrated into research and how transformational change can be achieved through original thinking.
