Presentation Abstract
Fostering a positive research culture around interdisciplinary research
Interdisciplinary research holds the potential for transformative discoveries that single
disciplines alone cannot achieve. Despite this promise, the reality often falls short. Evidence
from surveys, workshops, and interviews conducted by X-Net, a research network, reveals
significant barriers to interdisciplinary research, entrenched siloed structures in academia,
and inequitable evaluation processes. These obstacles hinder the career progression of
many researchers, who face unwelcoming and sometimes hostile environments.
To address these challenges, X-Net’s evidence-based report seeks to guide funders in how
to create the best conditions for effective interdisciplinary research. This approach
promotes the sharing of ideas and expertise beyond traditional academic boundaries and
sectors. Key solutions involve increasing mobility across disciplines and sectors, nurturing
supportive environments, and ensuring fair and sustainable evaluation and funding
processes. Achieving these goals demands a coordinated effort from universities, funders,
and the research community. The required changes will enable various research
communities to come together, emphasising the significance of a positive research
environment and cultivating advocates for change. This empowerment will allow individuals
to return to their organisations and lead essential advancements in interdisciplinary
research for the benefit of society.
