The Horticulture society was founded in 2014 with the aim of educating and engaging students in general horticultural activities and knowledge.
We are a bunch of students from different backgrounds and courses who enjoy nature, gardening, and chilling together. No horticulture, agriculture, or science knowledge required to join the society, just enthusiasm for soil and plants! At the HortSoc, we are dedicated to promoting a love for plants, sustainability, and environmental awareness. Our mission is to foster a community of individuals who are eager to learn about horticulture and its significance in today's world.
What we do?
Community– First and foremost we want you to make new friends and feel welcome in our society. We try to accommodate everybody’s tastes and host movie nights, coffee mornings, potlucks and other social events which is a great platform to socialize with other people and get involved in the community.
Cultivation – Our society grows organic fruits and vegetables in the UCD community garden. We have access to basic tools and equipment so you can learn to garden with us whether we are sowing seeds in the vegetable garden, making compost or pruning an apple tree. So pop down and grab a snack!
Education– We want you to learn new skills and educate yourself with us. We host educational/practical events throughout the year ranging from apple juicing workshop, gardening mornings and wild woodland walks.
Collaboration- We cohost a bunch of events with the other societies and organisations in UCD such as the Women+ in STEM Society, UCD Fair Fashion, UCD Biological Society and the Innovation Academy.
Our community garden and polytunnel are on the eastern side of the UCD Rosemount complex but just type “UCD Horticulture Society Garden” into Google maps and it’ll bring you straight here! We have over 300 members and host events every week throughout the academic term so check out our Instagram for our upcoming events and all news HortSoc.
