Learning outcomes are statements that specify what learners will know or be able to do as a result of completing a module or a course level.
The evidence of learning that you provide in your application will be compared to the published learning outcomes for the programme/modules for which you seek to have learning recognized. The learning outcomes for the module(s) can be found at:
Awards in Ireland are aligned with the (opens in a new window)National Framework of Qualifications.
Non-Graded credit is granted when the learning outcomes of the prior learning are relevant but not directly equivalent to modules in the relevant UCD programme and/or where credit associated with the learning outcomes has already counted towards an award.
Non-Graded credit is awarded as a block of credit that contributes to the overall credit requirements of the programme. It does not carry a grade and may not be included in GPA calculations.
Graded credit is granted when the learning outcomes of the prior learning are equivalent to the learning outcomes of a current UCD module(s) and where the prior learning has not already been counted towards an award.
The grades associated with graded credit may be transferred directly or with appropriate equivalencies mapped into the UCD academic record. All such grades will be recorded on the UCD transcript but will not normally be included in GPA calculations.
Recognition of Prior Certified Learning (RPCL) is where a learner has already been awarded certification for a formal programme taken at another institution or training organisation.
Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (Informal/Non-Formal) involves the awarding of credit for learning from experience, i.e. learning which has not previously been academically accredited.
A fee may be charged to cover the costs of processing an RPL application. You should contact the relevant school/college before applying.
Concurrent Learning/External Credit-Modules at other Institutions
With prior approval from their supervisor, research students may register to modules outside of UCD for credit. As with modules taken within UCD, supervisors must sign off on the module as being appropriate for the academic development of the student. The institution must also provide official confirmation of successful module completion. The School will then make a recommendation to the Governing Board that the student receives appropriate credit toward their mandatory 30-credit requirement. If a student or School is in any doubt about whether the Governing Board will sanction credit for a specific external module they must check in advance before proceeding with undertaking the module. Details of these modules will appear on your UCD record.
