At the (opens in a new window)Society of Actuaries Annual Convention 2019, eight UCD (opens in a new window)Actuarial & Financial Studies Stage 1 and Stage 2 students presented material from their group projects that investigated the wider usefulness of the actuarial skillset.
Mr Colm Fitzgerald (lecturer in Actuarial & Financial Studies, UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics) said "These are students with great potential. Many become actuaries, and it’s wonderful to see when they use this potential to expand the depth and breath of our profession, something that’s not just good for them but also for us as a Society too. If you missed the event, I’d recommend taking a look at the YouTube videos. I’d like to thank the Society [of Actuaries in Ireland] for the opportunity that they gave to the students - for a number of reasons. The videoing of the event enabled the students to get accepted and give their presentations virtually at the recent Actuarial Teachers & Researchers Conference in the UK in June. Their presentations were widely praised at the event."
The presentations given by the UCD students were as follows:
- Actuaries in Sustainable Development & Microinsurance: Louise Gannon
- Actuaries and Waste Management: David Watters
- Actuaries in Environment Finance: Marina Cunningham and Ronan Coleman
- Actuaries and Artificial Intelligence: Oisín Morgan and Scott McElhinney
- Actuaries in the Energy Industry: Krzysztof Wroblewski
- Actuaries in the Justice System - Calculating Criminal Punishment: Rebecca O'Mahoney
The presentations can be viewed on the (opens in a new window)Society of Actuaries YouTube channel.
