Continuation

The College of Science seeks to support students to progress through their degree programme and achieve their potential.

We recognise that there are many factors which may affect a student’s academic progress.  The Science Governing Board is responsible for monitoring the overall performance of students registered to each programme under its remit.

The Governing Board is also responsible for determining standards for acceptable and unacceptable performance and progression for their programmes.

For undergraduate programmes in Science, students who have not progressed from their current stage by the end of the academic year, and/or who return failing grades that account for more than 50% of their registered modules in the Spring Trimester, will be identified under the Continuation and Readmission Policy.  Students whose rate of progression and performance over two academic years is deemed unacceptable may be recommended for discontinuation by the Governing Board.

Students who have not progressed from their current stage by the end of the academic year, and/or who return failing grades that account for more than 50% of their registered modules in the Spring Trimester, will be identified under the Continuation and Readmission Policy.

The aim of this meeting will be twofold:

  • to inform students of the supports which are available to address any issues that may have contributed to the difficulties encountered during that trimester/academic year.
  • to ensure there is a clear academic plan in place to support progression through the programme in a timely manner

Students whose academic performance continues to fall below acceptable standards will be invited to a second meeting to review performance and consider the options which are available to assist with progression through the degree programme.

Students whose academic performance continues to fall below acceptable standards will be invited to a third meeting with their Programme Director/Coordinator to review performance and options for continuation on the programme.

Failure to respond to these meeting requests will be taken as lack of engagement with the University Continuation policy and it will be noted that the student did not take up the offer of support at this time.

A Governing Board reserves the right to recommend discontinuation on a programme of study where a student fails to engage with the Continuation Policy process (as outlined above) and where academic performance is deemed to be unacceptable.
