Why I Moved to Ireland
I am Georgie and I’m from New Glarus, Wisconsin, USA. What am I doing in Dublin, Ireland? Attending a top ranked university in an outstanding country! I come from an international background; my mother is American and my father is German and Thai so travelling is incredibly essential to me. Dublin is a major cosmopolitan hub lined with rich culture, forward thinking, and a joyous atmosphere.
Dublin is geographically advantageous because you can fly to both minor and major cities all over the world at ready convenience. The accessibility to go abroad is a major allure for living here. You can hop on a flight to continental Europe on a Friday (my go to is Berlin) and be back Sunday evening to resume classes. As Ireland’s largest city, Dublin is contemporary and busy while simultaneously not over whelming. Dublin's size makes it perfect for adjusting to life on your own for the first time whilst having all advantages of a major metropolitan city.
A train or bus to the Irish countryside is affordable and quick. A train to Cork city is just over two and a half hours which transports you into a fresh way of Irish life. I’d suggest a window seat; the train passes through breathtaking scenery. Alternative excellent locations to visit are Connemara in Galway and the Benbulbin mountain in Sligo.
University College Dublin is designated as ‘Ireland’s Global University’ and is cultivated to international students. On top of an excellent education standard, UCD has a great student life. With constant events, hundreds of clubs and societies, and friendly faces the university transcends into a community. You will run into friendly faces no matter where you are on campus!
I have just finished my final year in Cell & Molecular Biology. My first year of college I was able to engage in a diverse range of classes including linear algebra, cell biology & genetics, and medicinal chemistry. In second year, I focused my studies on degree subjects of Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, and Pharmacology. In the future I am in the process of applying to postgraduate programmes at a variety of universities in Dublin, Berlin, and Wisconsin.
