Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy

A formal review of the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy was proposed at the initiation stage of the Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention project to  ensure that it  is aligned to the (opens in a new window)National Student Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Framework. The initiation of the review was approved by UMT Student Experience Group (SEG), 25 November 2022.  The policy review has taken place within the context of broad and comprehensive review of the University’s approaches to student mental health and wellbeing. The policy review component of the project has been completed by a small policy drafting group under the oversight of the Policy and Structures Working Group, a sub-group of the Student Mental and Health & Wellbeing (SMH&W) Steering Group.

A protocol for responding to distressed students has been developed in response to requests for clear guidance for faculty and staff. During consultation, (e.g with the College & School Office Directors Group), the need for clear, concise guidance for staff who do not have expertise in student mental health, on what to do when a student presents in a distressed state or becomes distressed was highlighted as a priority.
