Azouz Begag is a celebrated French writer, politician, and social and economic researcher at the CNRS. Born of Algerian parents in in the metropolitan area of Lyon, he became famous for his 1986 autobiographical novel Le Gone du Chaâba (Shantytown Kid), The novel, about growing up as a migrant in a French shantytown, quickly became a bestseller and subsequently a movie (1998). Begag's scientific research focuses on questions around immigration and integration, and he served as Minister for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities in Dominique de Villepin's government from 2005 to 2007. This conversation will range across these different aspects of his life and career and includes a question-and-answer session with the audience.
