For nearly five centuries, Luís Vaz de Camões' maritime epic has profoundly influenced poetics, politics, and concepts of identity within the Lusophone world and beyond. The event “Luís de Camões: echoes and legacies” serves as an academic and cultural celebration within Ireland of the 500th anniversary of Camões' birth.

This evening event offers researchers, students, and the general public a chance to explore the legacy of this eminent early modern Portuguese poet through contemporary, multidisciplinary, and transnational lenses.

Featuring an introduction by Carlos M. Bobone, author of the most recent Camões biography, a lecture "Of Canons and Controversies: Luís de Camões, then and now" by Prof. Simon Park (University of Oxford), and a roundtable discussion on Camões' reception across various cultural contexts with experts from the UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics: Assoc Prof Síofra Pierse, Dr Serena Laiena, Dr Katherine Brown & Dr Pascale Baker.

The event aims to explore, through academic dialogue, the life and work of the Portuguese writer and the impact of his writings on the European literary scene.

The event is organised by the UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, with funding from the Thresholds of Knowledge research theme, in collaboration with Camões IP / Embassy of Portugal in Dublin.
