Applications are closed for Trimester 2, 2024/25.
Are you interested in teaching English in conversation classes to members of UCD Estates who are non-English speakers?
We encourage all students to get involved in T2 2025 with UCD Language Tutor Volunteers project by becoming English Language Tutors or by volunteering to be substitute English Language tutors. Please contact the project organisers via (opens in a new window)lydia.capitano@ucd.ie
What is a UCD Language Tutor Volunteer?
Helping non-English speakers to improve their spoken English is a chance to create change for a group of individuals and to make an impact on their careers and their lives.
If you have very good (fluent or near-fluent) English language skills yourself and you are happy to teach one hour of English to a non-English speaker/ a small group (max 3) non-English speakers for 8 sessions in T2 2025, please contact us!
Simply send an email to (opens in a new window)lydia.capitano@ucd.ie and outline your availability (mornings Mon-Thur) please.
What or how will I teach?
You will concentrate on spoken English with your English language student. You may wish to use online materials that are freely available, or you may prefer to follow a book. We will encourage tutors to first show cartoons and discuss them afterwards to ascertain the level of the student/s. Classes will normally be one-on-one, but will have a maximum of 3 students per group.
Who are my students?
This is a direct collaboration between UCD School of Languages cultures and linguistics and UCD Estates cleaning services. Studnets are (often highly-qualified) non-English language professionals from across the globe who currently work for UCD Estates, mostly in the Cleaning department. This is a collaboration with that group to ensure that they have contact with English-speakers while they are working in Ireland and particularly in UCD.
Will I be selected?
Supply may outstrip demand, so do let us know what prior teaching experience you have, if any. We provide any books required, but we recommend that teachers use online visual materials freely available. NO prior teaching experience OR Teaching of English as a Foreign Language necessary (but always helpful).
