New Pathways

2018 will see the launch of an exciting new four-year BA Humanities degree to complement UCD’s existing BA and our School’s flagship programme the BA International Modern Languages. 

Where the BAIML allows students to study up to three languages together with their cultures and explore intercultural issues, the new BA Humanities will feature nine pathways offering integrated programmes of study across clusters of cognate areas. This will allow students to deepen their subject knowledge whilst working in an interdisciplinary environment that will include opportunities for study abroad, research projects and work experience placements. The School of Languages Cultures and Linguistics will be teaching on two of the pathways: ‘English and World Literatures’ and ‘Languages, Linguistics and Cultures’.

The 4-year International Modern Languages programme is shared by all language subjects in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. The programme offers students an opportunity to focus their Arts degree on languages, and the cultures and literatures in which they are embedded, and to explore the connections, interactions and common ground between them. This programme develops an in-depth understanding and a questioning of the literary and intellectual legacies of European languages, including English. You will look at the ways in which these literatures have impacted, and continue to impact, beyond their countries of origin. You will explore the relationship between writing and place, examine how other cultures respond to key/global issues, and assess how languages encode and challenge cultural identities.

This programme is designed for students who are seeking a high level of language and intercultural competency by developing effective communication and analytical skills. The programme takes a holistic approach to language by fostering linguistics, alongside literary and cultural approaches. Students can chose between French, German, Greek, Italian, Irish, Latin, and Spanish, with Portuguese and Welsh also available as minors. Irish modules are directed towards its status as a modern working language in the European Union and towards broadening its scope nationally and internationally.
