PhD scholarship: Identity at Play in 18th-century French Female-Authored Drama
UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics invites applications to a four-year long fully-funded PhD fellowship in 18th-century French and Francophone Studies. This award includes full fee waiver (EU and non-EU), a generous stipend of €15,000 per annum, and funds towards a new laptop, conference travel, research library visits and book purchases. Alumni Reception 2.0
We are delighted to invite you to the Grand Opening of our newly refurbished premises and our first Alumni Networking Event on Thursday, 16th May 2019 at 6pm in D301 (Newman Building, UCD).
Why 2.0? Unfortunately, our first Alumni Reception on 28th February was cancelled after only 30 minutes, a few glasses of wine and the start of some interesting conversations, due to an unforeseen power outage. Open Simona Storchi (Associate Professor of Italian at the University of Leicester) and Sharon Wood (Professor of Italian, University of Leicester) discuss the Festschrift for Professor Wood Women and the Public Sphere in Modern and Contemporary Italy which looks at the multifaceted relationship between women and the public sphere from the mid-19th to the early 21st century through the lens of space and place studies, and gender and queer studies to name but a few of the approaches. The event will be chaired by Ursula Fanning (Associate Professor and Head of Italian Studies, SLCL, UCD).

Leuven Study Trip 2019
From 18-20 March 2019 a group of 18 final and second-year UCD SLCL students, accompanied by Dr Gillian Pye, Dr Sandrine Peraldi and Dr Sabine Krobb, took part in a study trip to Brussels and the (opens in a new window)Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe. The visit was a fantastic, stimulating learning experience, providing a unique insight into the crucial role of languages and intercultural communication in the EU and the career opportunities available to graduates in EU institutions. Major Expansion of Academic Posts - Ad Astra Fellows Positions Now Open
The UCD Ad Astra Fellows programme is one part of this initiative. DiplomAT Award Ceremony
We proudly announce the winners of the Essay competition with the title "Liberty and Security: Which Foreign Policy Strategies should small member states of the EU pursue?" that followed the workshop "diplomAT Austrian Foreign Affairs from the Viennese Congress to the Presidency of the EU-Council in 2018" that took place on 22nd and 23rd November 2018: (opens in a new window)https://padlet.com/anneliese_rieger/886ftd7b4xio
The award ceremony took place on 23rd February 2019. The jury, including Dr Herbert Herzmann, Anneliese Rieger (Austrian lecturer, UCD), Stephanie Winkler (Austrian diplomat in Dublin) and Lisa Winter (Austrian lecturer, Maynooth University) awarded Rosa Geoghegan (TCD) with the first prize, the second prize went to Ryan Fishwick (UCD), the third prize to Comhall Fanning (TCD) and the fourth prize to Maureen O'Rafferty.
The prizes included flight vouchers to Vienna, books, films, classical music CDs and Austrian sweets. The essays will be published in the April 2019 edition of PenArt: (opens in a new window)https://penartzeitschrift.com/

German Colours Debate 2019
Wednesday, 27th February, 7pm in D301, Newman Building (UCD)
The motion is: "Kokosnüsse statt Kartoffeln! Soll Irland sich auf den Klimawandel vorbereiten?" and the two teams are currently working on their not always scientifically proven arguments. So come along and enjoy!
Special guest will be H.E. Mrs Deike Potzel, the German Ambassador to Ireland, who will give the welcome speech.
A reception after the debate will allow further deliberation on the topic.
Everybody is more than welcome to attend, though basic German language competencies would be conducive to enjoy the event to the fullest.

Script Viewing 2018/2019 - Semester 1 Exams
Students wishing to view their exam script(s) can do so from Thursday, 14th February 2019 after 2pm and for a month after.
Please email the School Office ((opens in a new window)slcl@ucd.ie) your student number, module code(s) of the exam(s) and the date/time you wish to view. Appointments can be made Monday to Friday, 10.15am to 12.45pm and 2.15pm to 4.15pm. Please note that one working day notice is requested and a student card must be presented at viewing.
We advise that you view your exam in the School Office first and arrange an appointment with the module coordinator should you have further questions or concerns.

A pair of lectures by two distinguished scholars of the Renaissance, Pamela Long and Nandini Das, took place on Tuesday 29 January in the UCD Humanities Institute. The speakers have pioneered innovative approaches to cultural transmission whose relevance to the Renaissance is matched by their potential to open up new perspectives on more recent periods.
The talks form part of a cycle organised by the Modern Architecture and Culture in the Mid-Twentieth research project funded by the UCD Humanities Institute and co-organized by Professor Kathleen James-Chakraborty in Art History and Dr Douglas Smith (SLCL).

The one-day colloquium on French novelist Georges Perec will be held in the NUI (49 Merrion Square, Phelan Room) on Wednesday 5 December. The event marks the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Perec's major novel La Vie mode d'emploi; papers look both at his work and at his later influence. Read more ->

TALK: Historical memory and the significance of exhuming Franco's body'
Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Spanish, Paddy Woodworth, will be giving a talk to students of the Hispanic Cultures and Societies module on Thursday, 18th October at 1pm in L-024 SUTH. The talk will question whether one can legitimately contrast the insistence of the Right on acknowledgement and repentance of terrorist crimes from ETA members, and the Right's own refusal to acknowledge or repent for an attempted coup d'etat, massive ideological cleansing, and 40 years of state terrorist crimes'

TALK: Stories of women, in paint an on the page
'From A to B: Sibilla Aleramo and Anna Banti - Women's Autobiographical Writings in the Twentieth Century' by URSULA FANNING, Associate Professor of Italian Studies at the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at University College Dublin.
The talk outlines how significant the autobiographical enterprise is to several women authors’ attempts to find a unique voice and thereby construct a female subjectivity, drawing upon evidence spanning across the full breadth of the twentieth century.The paper will focus on two exponents of the autobiographical form, Sibilla Aleramo (particularly her seminal work, Una donna, of 1906 – this was a truly ground-breaking text, extraordinary in the context of women’s writing tout court), and Anna Banti (especially her Artemisia, written in Florence and published in 1953). The importance of both writers’ relationship with the art world will also be explored.

TALK: The Global Turn: Post-War Modernism and its Regimes of Circulation

Speaker: Professor Tom Avermaete (Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design, ETH Zürich)
Professor Avermaete is a leading figure in the field of architectural history, with particular research interests in urban design and modernism in non-Western contexts. Among his many publications number Another Modern: The Post-War Architecture of Candilis-Josic-Woods (2005), Colonial Modern (with Serhat Karakayali and Marion Von Osten, 2010), Structuralism Reloaded? (with Tomáš Valena and Georg Vrachliotis 2011), Chandigarh Casablanca (with Maristella Casciato, 2014), and Acculturating the Shopping Centre (with Janina Gosseye, 2018).
This talk is part of a series of talks co-organised by Dr Douglas Smith (SLCL) and Kathleen James-Chakraborty (School of Art History and Cultural Policy) and funded by the Humanities Institute.

European Day of Languages 2018
German Society, in association with UCD German Studies, hosted a well-attended reception and info evening for all students of German on European Day of Languages: Wednesday 26 September. The gathering was treated to inspirational talks by 6 alumni and 3 final-year students of German. The alumni offered insights into their career paths and current areas of employment or further study and how their degree with German got them to where they are today, while the 3 final-year students of German back from their Erasmus year abroad in Germany and Austria made all the students want to sign up for Erasmus straightaway! Refreshments, snacks and free pizza were provided. Huge thanks to all speakers and the committee of German Soc!

Annual conference of the German Studies Association of Ireland
UCD German will be hosting the annual conference of the Germans Studies Association of Ireland on 16th and 17th November 2018. This year’s conference theme is “Conflict, Crisis and Culture” (Download the CfP ). The conference venue is the re-opened Goethe Institute on Merrion Square on Friday, 16th November and the Humanities Institute UCD on Saturday, 17th November. Programme to follow.
As part of the conference, the Germanistik in Ireland Yearbook 2018 (general editor Gillian Pye, with guest editors Marina Durnin and Barbara Siller, UCC) will be launched on the Friday evening.
Foundation for Italian Studies lecture and Research presentation
The UCD Foundation for Italian Studies is hosting two events, both have relevance beyond the discipline of Italian Studies.
Prof. Jenny Burns from the University of Warwick is giving a public lecture on Thursday evening, 20th September 2018 at 6.30pm in Theatre R Newman, and will give a research presentation on Friday afternoon, 21st Sepember 2018 at 2pm in J104 Newman.
