Katherine Gosling PhD

Biography:

I am a first year PhD candidate in the UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. I completed my BA in Spanish and Linguistics in UCD, before undertaking a two year Research Masters degree (MLitt) in UCD under the supervision of my current supervisor. My MLitt thesis focused on depictions of pain in the images and texts of Leonora Carrington through the lens of Jungian analysis, embodiment studies and a clinical study of chronic pain. 

My research interests include: Surrealism, twentieth-century women writers and visual artists of Hispanic studies, narratives of pain, mental ill-health and wellness in images and texts. 

Thesis Summary: 

My PhD thesis builds on my MLitt research by investigating the concept of translating pain experiences in the images and texts of Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) and Remedios Varo (1908-1963). My thesis analyses depictions of pain in the artists’ works and it investigates precisely how visual and textual aesthetics facilitate the translatability of this experience through the lens of the Critical Medical Humanities. I analyse literary works such as the memoir, short story, novel and personal letters alongside visual works of painting and sketch. I also consider the role of the hybrid work of art in relation to the question of translatability.
