Localisation Project

Abstract map of world

Overview

This project aims at developing a digital learning resource for a Localisation Grad Dip programme at UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics with an external partner Hermes Traducciones y Servicios Lingüísticos, a language service company in Spain.

About the project:

At UCD SLCL we have just designed and piloted a new programme (under Springboard funding) called Graduate Diploma in Localisation. The aim of the programme is to prepare graduates with excellent language competence who would like to move into a role in the broad area of localisation.

These students generally have very little knowledge of how localisation companies work and what roles exist within them and how localisation differs from translation. This poses problems in terms of students’ interactions with potential internship providers and their understanding of course content. That is why we designed a resource focusing on the roles and profiles available in translation and localisation companies, the roles that exist within localisation projects and an overview of localisation. This resource will help students gain insights into the world of localisation and for our partner it is an opportunity to promote their profile inside and outside of Spain and to use it for their own teaching purposes. We see it as a potentially open-ended resource. We start out with capturing the roles that are well established now and then regularly add to the resource newly emerging roles with the help of other companies. For instance, currently subtitling is growing in importance but is little represented in many companies for now. This may, however, change rather quickly in this fast moving industry. We use the resource in our programme modules and encourage our students to work through it at the beginning of their learning pathway.

Many thanks to Zvjezdana Topalovic for facilitating access to some localisation specialists in Welocalize and the UCD Global Engagement Seed Fund for providing the financial support for the project.
