Testing times: Viral surveillance and social control in post-lockdown societies
UCD School of Sociology's Dr Seán L'Estrange has recently had an article published in the (opens in a new window)Irish Journal of Sociology (IJS). The article is titled Testing times: Viral Surveillance and social control in post-lockdown societies..
Abstract:
Covid-19 testing is less a bio-medical intervention targeting individual health than an exercise in data-gathering and surveillance on a micro-organism hosted by human bodies. This Debates piece identifies some of the social implications of Covid-19 testing and tracing regimes and the questions they raise in the context of the regulated resumption of social life in liberal-democratic societies in the wake of the generalised lockdowns of March-May 2020.
