Purposeful solitude: reading Thoreau in a lockdown
UCD Sociology's Prof Andreas Hess has responded to the various 'lockdown reading lists' promoted by influential newspapers in an article for (opens in a new window)Open Democracy. Prof Hess proposes a deeper critical assessment of Thoreau's Walden and his Journals as not just reflections on the self, but as an understanding of the nature of the relationship between individuals and society.
