What is academic advising at UCD? Academic advising is where students are supported by faculty in making appropriate choices from a wide range of opportunities towards achieving realistic academic and professional goals.
What is an academic advisor? Think of me as your go-to person for academic queries and support. Where appropriate, I can also point you towards other supports available at UCD. I’ve worked at UCD for more than 25 years so I will either know the answer or know where to find the information you need.
When might academic advising be useful?
This will vary depending on where you are in your degree programme.
- When you don’t understand UCD jargon or policies. These can create unnecessary barriers for first year students and I’m very happy to act as a translator.
- If it would be helpful to discuss ways to set and achieve realistic academic goals.
- When you have an important choice to make e.g. you are thinking about an internship or study abroad in Stage 3.
- If you want to discuss other matters related to studying sociology or staying on track for graduation.
- If you need specialist advice about postgraduate research opportunities.
How do I get in touch? Come to the monthly Wednesday coffee in D422 Newman (the dates and times will be updated in due course). There will be coffee, tea, snacks and a chance for informal conversation and general guidance and advice.
If you would prefer a one-to-one meeting, you can email me to arrange to meet me in my office or on Zoom if that would work better for you. If these times don't suit you can email to arrange an appointment. Please don't be shy about dropping in or making an appointment with me if there is something you want to discuss or if I can help.
I look forward to meeting you!
