BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, January 2019
Professor Colin Scott, Dean of Social Sciences University College Dublin presenting the UCD Social Sciences Special Category Award to Abby Reynolds, Ailish O'Hanlon and Aoife O'Brien from Colaiste Treasa Kanturk, Co Cork for their project ˜What Do You Think Of Me? A statistical analysis of adolescents & elderly people's perceptions of aging- in Social and Behavioural Sciences Junior Group Category.'
The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition was held in the RDS, Dublin from 10th -12th January and UCD Social Sciences were delighted to participate in this annual event. There were 550 finalist projects showcased at the event by secondary students from all over the island of Ireland with 178 projects in the Social and Behavioural Sciences category (32%) which was the largest category. The projects involved interesting and challenging questions, rigorous methodologies, rewarding findings and strong presentations. Our College had a stand in a very prominent position at the exhibition to promote the social and behavioural sciences with the thousands of primary and secondary students who attended and also their parents and teachers and the general public.
The UCD Social Sciences Special Category Award was presented at the annual event’s awards ceremony by Professor Colin Scott, UCD Dean of Social Sciences to Abby Reynolds, Ailish O'Hanlon and Aoife O'Brien from Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk, Co Cork for their project ˜What Do You Think Of Me? A statistical analysis of adolescents & elderly people's perceptions of aging in Social and Behavioural Sciences Junior Group Category.' Their project investigated the perceptions of ageing and the elderly in a population of teenagers attending a co-educational school in Cork and explored the impact of implementing inter-generational social, educational and activity-based interventions. Their study consisted of a cross sectional study using a questionnaire and incorporated an intervention study on a sub population.
