New BSc Social Sciences degree launched by University College Dublin
Wednesday, 18 October, 2017
In response to the needs of graduates to develop strong research skills, acquire real-world work experience and cultivate a global mindset, University College Dublin has launched a new four-year BSc Social Sciences degree, which offers intensive courses in research skills; the opportunity to benefit from a professional internship with a government, business or non-governmental organisation; and an option to study in a leading university in the US, Europe or Asia.
Pictured above (l-r): Mr Brian Mooney, Guidance Counsellor and Assistant Principal at Oatlands College, Mount Merrion, Dublin; Associate Professor Sara O'Sullivan, Associate Dean of Social Sciences; and Professor Colin Scott, Dean of Social Sciences, Principal of UCD College of Social Sciences and Law and Vice President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; pictured at the launch of the new BSc Social Sciences and a Guidance Counsellors at Seminar in University College Dublin on Tuesday, 26 September 2017.
Exciting new pathways are now available in the four-year BSc Social Sciences degree including:
If you are interested in Mathematics, Statistics and Economics, this degree enables you to explore these areas in depth while also emphasising how they complement each other. You will be given the opportunity to specialise in the latter stages of your degree, for example, in applied economics, advanced statistics, mathematical modelling of complex processes, or developing “Big Data” skills.
This unique, four-year interdisciplinary degree brings together the approaches and skills of Archaeology, Geography and History. You will explore how the landscape shapes humans at the same time as humans shape the landscape combining natural and socio-cultural perspectives on the formation, cultural significance and management of the landscape. The degree has clear links to the rapidly expanding Heritage sector.
PPE provides a broad and deep understanding of how a society works, and indeed how international society works. It examines the complex economic and political forces in play, the problems of measuring and assessing the health of society, and the principles of justice that should guide political decision-making to improve society. PPE will teach students how to read beyond media headlines, and where to find more information about the hot policy questions of the day, in national and international contexts. PPE provides a thorough grounding in all three disciplines that are core to the social sciences.
