Biographical History

  • BA and MA (1955) from UCD under Jeremiah Hogan

  • Teaching Fellowship at Harvard

  • Assistant Professor of English at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon

  • Associate Professor in Notre Dame

  • Joined UCD Staff in 1965 firstly as a Lecturer in English and Anglo Irish Literature and then as Professor of Anglo Irish Literature and Drama.

  • He retired in 1990

  • Founding editor of the Irish University Review which was established in 1970

  • Author and editor of numerous books including: Sean O'Faolain: A Critical Introduction, University of Notre Dame Press, 1967; The Poetry of Thomas Kinsella, Wolfhound Press, 1974; Irish Poetry after Yeats: Seven Poets, Little, Brown 1979; No Author Better Served: The Correspondence of Samuel Beckett and Alan Schneider, Harvard University Press (Cambridge, MA), 1998.

  • Harmon is also a poet and has published several collections including: The Last Regatta and Other Poems, Salmon Press 2000; Tales of Death and Other Poems, Lapwing 2001; The Doll with Two Backs and Other Poems, Salmon Press, 2005; The Mischievous Boy and Other Poems, Salmon Press, 2008; and When Love Is Not Enough: New and Selected Poems, Salmon Press, 2010

Transferred to UCD in 2016.

Scope and Content

The archival collection reflects all aspects of Harmon’s professional life, as academic, critic, journal editor and poet.  It includes correspondence with Seamus Heaney, Mary Lavin, Samuel Beckett, Thomas Kinsella and many other luminaries of 20th and 21st century Irish literature.
