What is this Structured Elective about?
In this structured elective, emphasis is placed on learning a language for work or study internationally. The focus is on functional language for use in social, professional or scholarly environments. On completion of these modules, students should be able to communicate in Italian at beginner or intermediate level, speak, understand, read and write in Italian to the specified CEFR level and demonstrate better awareness of cultural issues in relation to Italy and Italian-speaking regions.

Why should I take this Structured Elective?
The aim of this structured elective is to prepare students for greater mobility socially, professionally or academically and modules can be chosen to complement students’ studies or work opportunities in Ireland or internationally.

How would this Structured Elective benefit me?
Competence in global languages is increasingly valued in a multilingual, international work environment in Ireland and overseas.

How do I take the modules in this Structured Elective & what are they?

  • Structured Electives are available to undergraduate students only.
  • Students who have completed at least 15 credits (from September 2023/24) from the set of specified modules will have a Structured Elective in Applied Italian noted on their official transcript.
  • To be awarded this Structured Elective you must take 15 credits from the list of modules outlined below. You will not be awarded this Structured Elective if you are graduating with a major or minor listed in the Eligibility section below.
  • Students will not register for this Structured Elective in advance. It will be awarded post hoc based on the electives they have chosen during their undergraduate studies.
  • No guarantee will be given to students that it will be possible to take 15 credits from the set. This will depend on module places being available and on the exigencies of the timetable.
