How do I book a Health Screening Appointment?
You can book your health screening appointment 48 hours after your UCD registration becomes live.
Appointments can be booked by calling reception in the Student Health Service on 01-7163134.
When do I attend for Health Screening?
- Health Screening starts in September. You must be registered as a UCD student for 48 hours before you can book an appointment. Students are expected to have arranged their first appointment by October 18th 2024.
What MUST I bring with me when presenting for health screening?
- Original Photo Identity Document, either Passport or Driver’s Licence.
- No ID on day - No screening!
What else do I bring?
- Vaccine records should be translated into English and using the Gregorian calendar.
- Any record of previous Hepatitis B vaccination
- If you have childhood vaccination records, especially MMR and Chicken Pox (Varicella), bring them to your appointment. MMR serology is not accepted as per Infectious Disease Policy.
- A copy of a Quantiferon IGRA / T-Spot TB blood test OR a Mantoux/Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) results if either test was carried out within the last 2 years. We will only accept negative results. If there are any positive results this should be followed up locally before you can come to UCD.
- You should still attend your health screening appointment even if do not have all your vaccine records.
How much is the Health Screening Charge (HSC)
The Health Screening fee is €310 and is paid along with your UCD registration fee (this is for all courses).
What does the Health Screening Charge (HSC) include?
The health screening programme for all undergrad and graduate Medicine students consists of:
- Blood test to check for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV and Varicella Zoster (Chicken Pox) immune status.
- Provision of 1 course of Hepatitis B vaccines as required. (3 doses of vaccine)
- Recording evidence of previous BCG vaccine. There is no need to get a new BCG vaccine.
- Blood testing to assess post-vaccination antibody levels on completion of Hepatitis B vaccine course. This will be applicable for the Health Screen courses from 2023/2024 onwards.
- Recording Proof of 2 doses of MMR vaccine.
- Providing the Schools with regular updates of the student’s compliance with UCD’s I.D. Policy.
- Providing a Certificate of Completion to include confirmation of your vaccine and health screening records. This will be applicable for the Health Screen courses from 2023/24 onwards. This should be besides providing a Certificate of Completion to include confirmation of your vaccine and health screening records.
Health Screening is expected to be completed within 12-15 months.
What is not included in the €310 (HSC)
- Any MMR vaccine required (if you are unable to provide proof of MMR x 2 vaccination).
- Any Varicella vaccines required (if your health screening blood test shows that you are not varicella immune)
- Additional Hepatitis B vaccines required above the standard Hepatitis B course of 3 doses.
- Quantiferon IGRA TB blood test.
Test for Tuberculosis (TB) status
Your TB test must have been done within the last 2 years. If it has been more than 2 years you will need to repeat this test. It can be done in the Student Health Service by booking an IGRA test and there is a €125 charge for this.
MMR documentation:
A complete course consisting of 2 doses of MMR vaccine is required. MMR serology is not accepted as per Infectious Disease Policy.
MMR vaccination is part of your routine childhood & school vaccination schedules.
If you do not have documentation of 2 MMR vaccines, check with your family GP first.

MMR for overseas students:
A complete course consists of 2 doses. MMR vaccine and was introduced in Malaysia in 2002. It may be recorded as Campak, Beguk & Rubella. If you have an incomplete of MMR course, this should be completed prior to arriving in Ireland.

If you still cannot provide a record of 2 MMR vaccines, MMR vaccination will be offered for an additional charge, or the course can be completed by your GP.
You must show proof of 2 MMRs to complete your health screen.
Varicella (Chicken pox) immunity:
Your Varicella (chicken pox) immune status is checked as part of the health screening blood tests.
If your blood test does not show immunity, 2 doses of Varicella vaccine are required to complete health screening. This is irrespective of whether you have had Chickenpox disease previously or not.
If you received Varicella vaccine as a child, please bring these records to your health screen appointment.
