Panel to explore the role of universities in climate injustice with Prof. Jennie Stephens

Wednesday, 19 February, 2025

We are delighted to announce an extra event to the UCD Green Week schedule; a keynote by Jennie C. Stephens, Professor of Climate Justice at Maynooth University, followed by a panel discussion.

'On climate injustice, are universities part of the problem or can they be transformative?’

The panellists are Dr Shane Bergin, Associate Professor in Science Education, Miranda Bauer, Students’ Union President and Professor Tasman Crowe, Vice-President for Sustainability.

Wednesday, 5th March, 15:00 - 16:00

Lochlann Quinn School of Business, lecture theatre Q04.

In 2025, it is increasingly clear that slow incremental changes toward narrowly defined climate goals are insufficient and inadequate.

To transform society toward a more healthy, just and stable future, universities play a critical role but is higher education structured to engage with systemic and structural change?  Can universities be transformed to co-create knowledge to reduce climate vulnerabilities and facilitate unlearning of knowledge frameworks that no longer serve humanity?

Building on ideas from Jennie Stephens’s new book - Climate Justice and the University - this panel discussion will reimagine the role of higher education in transformative and systemic change and discuss opportunities to reclaim and restructure universities for the public good.
