Former Dean Professor Boyd Jones Honoured by the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists
Former Dean of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Boyd Jones has been honoured with a special award by the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS). Professor Jones was presented with the College Oration by Professor Caroline Mansfield from the University of Melbourne at the ANZCVS Annual Meeting in July. The College Oration was established in 1977 to give recognition to a veterinarian in Australia or New Zealand who has made a major contribution to veterinary science, especially contributions that have a global and lasting impact, and is arguably the highest honour the College can bestow. While the honour can be awarded every year, Professor Jones is the first person to have been awarded the College Oration since 2009. The Oration takes the form of a short resumé of the recipient’s work, the presentation of a medallion to the recipient and orator, followed by a suitable address by a guest speaker. (Pictured: Professor Caroline Mansfield and Professor Boyd Jones) Congratulations to Professor Jones from all of his colleagues in the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine on receiving this well-deserved award.
Professor Jones’ research interests are in small animal internal medicine, publishing more than 170 refereed papers in aspects of canine and feline medicine. He graduated from Massey and taught at the University of Melbourne until 1975, when he returned to Massey to become an associate professor and the Head of the Small Animal Clinic and Hospital. In 1997, Professor Jones came to UCD, taking up the post of Chair in Small Animal Clinical Studies. He currently chairs the New Zealand Veterinary Journal editorial board and is involved in clinical work in New Zealand and Australia.
The award to Professor Jones has another UCD link - the oration was given by Professor Caroline Mansfield who completed her MVM and DECVIM-Ca as a resident in Dublin. Professor Mansfield is the immediate past President of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and is Professor of Companion Animal Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Her primary research interest is in gastroenterology, and after leaving Dublin she completed a PhD on aspects of pancreatitis in the dog at Murdoch University, West Australia before moving to Melbourne. We were delighted to hear that Professor Mansfield’s oration included a number of references to UCD and Dublin!
