Chloe Maloney - Veterinary Nursing Ad Astra Academic Scholar
Chloe Maloney, second year Veterinary Nursing student, has been awarded an Ad Astra Academic Scholarship. The UCD Ad Astra Academy is an initiative designed to recognise and nurture exceptional students in academia, sports and the performing arts. Scholars benefit from a scholarship, mentoring and a range of tailored supports. Each year, academic scholarships are awarded to students based on academic performance in Stage 1, and recipients are notified before the start of the following academic year.
Chloe is now in the second year of her programme, and she talks about her experience as a Veterinary Nursing student in UCD below:
I chose to study at UCD because I always wanted a career within the veterinary industry and with UCD being the only Veterinary School in Ireland, it was always my number one college of choice. UCD has the highest standard of education and the phenomenal facilities that the campus has to offer really attracted me. I decided to study the Bsc Veterinary Nursing in UCD as it is the only level 8 BSc Veterinary Nursing degree in Ireland and I felt that it would give me the best foundation for my future career.
I thoroughly enjoyed first year, with Anatomy and Physiology being my favourite module as I have a huge interest in how animals function. The practical classes were brilliant and really allowed me to deepen my knowledge of this area. Our placement module offered me a fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience of the role of the Vet Nurse in the day-to-day running of a practice and also to put my own nursing skills into practice. I am very excited for the modules I will be studying in second year, including Pharmacology and Diagnostic Imaging. Following graduation from UCD, I plan on pursuing a Masters in Veterinary Physiotherapy as I am really interested in the rehabilitation and post surgery/injury treatment of both horses and small animals.
