Lab-based Skills

  • RNA, DNA and Plasmid purification.
  • qPCR (relative and absolute), cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis and Nanostring (Transcriptomics laboratory).
  • Familiar with next generation sequencing technologies and SNP analysis.
  • Able to use a range of Bioinformatics tools and genome browsers which enable SNP discovery, haplotype and sequence analysis (Haploview and Arlequin).
  • Development of custom gene panels for SNPs and gene expression (Nanostring) for a range of species and tissue types.
  • Use of Cytoscape and IPA to visualise pathways and networks, interactions between gene lists and network topography.
  • Optimisation and design of primers for qPCR and conventional PCR on an ongoing basis.
  • Use of R programming environment to analyse custom Nanostring panels and use of Linux on the Sonic Computing cluster to analyse Next Generation Sequencing data.

Teaching Support

  • Assist students with data analysis, proofreading and publication preparation.

  • Manage the Molecular Biology Lab (234) and Class I GMO Laboratory.
