Dr Terry Grimes - IKC Award

Veterinary Opthalmologist Honoured by the Irish Kennel Club

At a ceremony following a meeting of An Ard Chomhairle on 21 July 2017, Dr Terry Grimes was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Irish Kennel Club in respect of services related to the control of hereditary ocular disease in dogs.  A commemorative medal was presented by Mrs R. McCarry Beattie, a member of the Board of Directors of the Club.  Dr Grimes is the first veterinary surgeon to be honoured in this way.

Terry Grimes qualified at the Royal Veterinary College London and joined the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics there before moving to University College Dublin and completing a training in Veterinary Radiology.  He spent a period at the Comparative Ophthalmology Unit, University of Cambridge and has held visiting teaching posts in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, Khartoum and Iowa State.  His PhD involved studies on ocular maldevelopment.  He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and is currently consultant to the UCD Veterinary Hospital.  He lectures to undergraduate Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Nursing students, postgraduates and on continuing education courses.  His main interests are ocular maldevelopment, ocular surgery and techniques of ocular examination of large and small animals.  He is a long serving member of the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme Panel.
